The History of Philadelphia's LOVE Statue: A Symbol of the City's Heart
Philadelphia is built on history — from the Liberty Bell to Independence Hall. But one of its most beloved icons isn't from the Revolutionary era. It's a modern emblem of affection and connection: the LOVE statue.
Here's how this famous sculpture became one of Philly's most recognizable symbols.

The Origin of the LOVE Sculpture
The LOVE design was created by American artist Robert Indiana in 1964 as a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Bright, bold, and instantly recognizable, it spelled out the word LOVE in stacked letters, with a tilted "O" that added a playful, almost kinetic energy.
It wasn't until the mid-1970s that the design took physical form as a sculpture.
In 1976, in honor of the U.S. Bicentennial, the City of Philadelphia installed Indiana's LOVE sculpture in John F. Kennedy Plaza — now famously known as LOVE Park. Its message felt perfectly at home in the City of Brotherly Love.
A Symbol for Locals and Visitors Alike
What started as a temporary installation quickly became a permanent fixture in the city's landscape.
The LOVE statue draws millions of visitors annually as the backdrop for marriage proposals, wedding photos, and everyday moments of connection. For Philadelphians, it's a symbol of pride. For visitors, it's a must-see (and a must-snap).
The park surrounding the sculpture was redesigned in 2018, improving its green space and sightlines to City Hall and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway — making it an even more stunning setting for this icon of affection.
